At Pott Shrigley Church School, we strongly believe that teaching our pupils good quality geographical skills equips them with a greater understanding and knowledge of the world around them and their place within it.  Ensuring our pupils are exposed to quality first teaching in stand-alone geography lessons as well as cross-curricular lessons will inspire in them a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. The aim is for this to stay with them throughout their school life and beyond, to understand that our world is a diverse place with natural and human environments that continually change over time.

At Pott Shrigley we carefully plan geography lessons to ensure that children start to develop key geographical skills from as early as EYFS where they learn knowledge and understanding of the world.  This progression continues into Key Stage 1 and 2 giving pupils the foundations to explore natural and human features. We provide teaching that builds on prior knowledge and provides natural progression, embedding geographical enquiry and investigation.Providing our pupils with relevant field trips in our local area allows them to practice hands-on skills and truly develop an understanding of their social, economic and environmental surroundings.

Pupils at our school will be introduced to relevant vocabulary early on so that they truly grasp key geographical language as they move up through the school.  This aids with deepening their understanding of subject matter and enables them to describe geographical features within their work accurately.Pupils will be given access to resources to assist them to observe, measure, record and present information to contribute in further developing their geographical skills.

At Pott Shrigley, the acquisition of knowledge that children gain from being exposed to a rich, varied and interactive geography curriculum ensures that they leave our school with a deep understanding of the world in which we live.  Alongside this, children will have been exposed to different experiences which will have allowed them to explore, gain an understanding and be competent when applying key geographical skills and vocabulary. This will help them to not only build a geographical awareness of their surroundings but enable them to understand the importance of protecting the world on a wider scale.
